The Effects of Group Art Therapy Using Games on the Self-control and Sociality of Children with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract
This study was to show the effect of the group art therapy program using games on self-control and sociality of children with intellectual disability. For this purpose, the group art therapy program using games was conducted for four children with mild intellectual disability(IQ: 60~68, SQ: 58.80~68.50). They are selected among the children(10-13 years). The group art therapy program using games was carried out a total of 15 sessions twice a week. To measure the effect of the program, a survey on the child's self-control and sociality was conducted through their teacher. Also Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test was performed. In addition, each session had been recorded, The three observers had recorded the action level by observing the subjects' behavior associated with self-control and sociality; the researchers compared the data changes on the basis of the analysis. Results of the study are as follows. First, self-control abilities of children with intellectual disability have been improved by the application of the group art therapy program using games. Children could control their behaviors through improvements in understanding regulations and orders of the Art game. Four children were able to express their own feelings and their peers¡¯ feelings appropriately in various circumstances. Second, sociality(receptivity, expressiveness, challenge, spontaneity) of children with intellectual disability have been improved after the application of the group art therapy program using games.
